Exploring Osmosis with Gummy Bears: A Fun Science Experiment

Welcome to the Gummy Bear Lab, where we'll delve into the fascinating world of osmosis using everyone's favorite chewy candy! While gummy bears are the star of the show, you can also experiment with Orbeez if you prefer, though caution is advised with the latter due to safety concerns.

Objective

Students will investigate the question: "How will soaking the gummy bears in different solutions affect their size?"

Through mass measurement, students will track changes in the gummy bears' size before and after soaking, enabling them to draw conclusions about the effects of the solutions on osmosis.

Get ready to dive into the world of mass measurement and discover the fascinating transformations of gummy bears in various solutions!

Materials Needed

  • Gummy bears or worms
  • Sugar and/or salt (solute)
  • Napkins
  • Weighing boats and Scale
  • Lab Report
  • Ruler
  • Calculator
  • Magnifying lens

Pre-Lab Preparation

Option 1: Have students measure and weigh the gummy bears a day before the lab. Prepare the gummies overnight in the desired solutions. The next day, students will return to complete the post-measurements.

Option 2: Alternatively, students can measure and weigh one set of gummy bears (considered as normal, before soaking). Then, provide them with a second set of soaked gummy bears for measurement (considered after soaking).


Procedure

  1. Divide participants into six groups, with each group equipped with the necessary materials listed above.
  2. Prepare two different solutions: one with salt and water, and the other with plain water.
  3. Place the gummy bears in each solution and leave them to soak for 24-48 hours, observing any changes in size as they absorb or release water through osmosis.

Note: While Orbeez can be used for this experiment, it's important to exercise caution, especially with younger students, as they may pose safety risks.

Let's Gather Data- Recording Dimensions

Students will meticulously record the length and width of three distinct types of gummies:
  • Normal gummy
  • Gummy soaked in water
  • Gummy soaked in water with salt or sugar added

Analysis

Armed with their measurements, students will embark on calculating the percent change for each gummy bear. They will compare the dimensions before and after soaking, determining the extent of growth or shrinkage for each specimen.

To provide a visual representation of their findings, students will graph the results, offering a clear depiction of the dimensional variations across different gummy bear types.

Finally, students will craft insightful conclusions based on their analyses, shedding light on the observed differences and elucidating the impact of varying solutions on gummy bear dimensions.
